About Me
contact me for a cv here.
I have a varied IT skillset, ranging from fixing up old computers to providing e-commerce and other website solutions for small/medium sized businesses and international companies alike. I gained valuable experience working as a front end developer at a small web + marketing company in Kenilworth, and have since expanded my skillset and worked with clients to produce dynamic, database-driven, search engine friendly, accessible websites. I have also developed bespoke content management systems (CMSs), a PHP reporting engine and various other solutions using web technologies.
In a recent role, I developed a bespoke reporting engine to provide a business intelligence solution for both users and managers. I also produced a number of internal and external websites complete with content management systems providing multilingual support.
i have formal qualifications in business, business communication, ICT and web development. I have also attended courses focused on producing accessible websites. To see some example of my work, check out my portfolio.
Passion
My passion for IT stems from an appreciation of the great technological advances of the last century and the benefits we have witnessed since. The average life expectancy of a western man has increased by 50% in the last 100 years, and technology was the main factor. The potential applications are almost limitless - from hospital machines, to the cash machines on the street, and especially in areas of business. Everybody then, can benefit from the development, application and use of technology. I like to think that I contribute to this process, even if it is just making a website for somebody, or helping out when someone's laptop dies.
Let me explain my passion for the web: the world wide web as we know it today, is the greatest library of mankind's collective knoweledge ever to have been created. With a couple of button presses, anyone, regardless of physical or mental capabilities can have access to any information they want - be it relating to science, engineering, music, art, or any other field in the human endeavour. More than that, we can all contribute - be it editing a wikipedia article, or just posting a link on facebook - we are all readers, and content providers alike. no longer do the victors write history - everyone does.
I think that the world wide web is in fact one of the most important developments in the history of mankind, with ICT and networking infrastructure providing the physical platform. I don't think anyone will disagree when I say that it will help shape everyone's future in some way. That's why we need to get it right, now. This is one of the reasons that I use open source technology wherever possible.
Technologies
For the more technical amongst you; I use the following technologies when producing a site:
- XHTML 1.1 / HTML 4.01/5 - the latest and strictest type of html for search engine friendly and future-proof web pages
- CSS 2.1/3 - the latest and most compatible way of styling web pages
- PHP 5 - used for creating ‘dynamic’ web pages, for example a login page
- MySQL 5 - databases for storing data such as information about a product
- JavaScript - to add interactivity to a web page, for example to resize a profile picture
- Linux/Microsoft - reliable servers ensure maximum performance and uptime
